Background of the Study
Language technology has increasingly become a catalyst for enhancing digital literacy in marginalized communities. In Northern Nigeria, Hausa communities are experiencing a transformative shift driven by innovations such as mobile applications, online educational platforms, and localized digital content. These technologies have enabled access to information and digital tools in the Hausa language, thereby bridging gaps in communication and learning (Abdullahi, 2023). The infusion of language technology into daily practices has fostered increased internet usage, improved reading and writing skills, and encouraged community participation in the digital economy. Moreover, the development of voice recognition and text-to-speech systems in Hausa has played a pivotal role in overcoming literacy barriers, particularly among rural populations. As digital platforms become more prevalent, the integration of language technology ensures that cultural nuances and local dialects are preserved while promoting educational development. Researchers have noted that effective technology adoption can enhance civic engagement and socioeconomic empowerment (Bello, 2024). However, challenges persist due to limited infrastructure, insufficient training, and inadequate technical support. Despite these obstacles, community-led initiatives and governmental policies have begun to address these issues. Continuous evaluation of digital literacy interventions is crucial for understanding their long-term impact and scalability. Recent studies also indicate that technology-driven language education has a multiplier effect, influencing both formal and informal learning contexts (Usman, 2025). This study investigates how language technology shapes digital literacy outcomes and identifies strategies to optimize its use for sustainable development in Hausa communities.

Statement of the Problem
Despite growing investments in language technology, many Hausa communities in Northern Nigeria still face challenges in achieving robust digital literacy. Existing digital platforms often lack culturally relevant content and localized interfaces, leading to low user engagement (Abdullahi, 2023). Additionally, infrastructural deficits and limited technical expertise contribute to a digital divide that hampers effective learning. These challenges create a gap between technology potential and actual literacy outcomes. Without targeted interventions, the full benefits of language technology may not be realized, risking further marginalization of these communities (Bello, 2024). Therefore, there is a critical need to evaluate current initiatives, identify barriers, and recommend actionable solutions that enhance digital literacy through culturally appropriate language technology.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the current impact of language technology on digital literacy in Hausa communities.
  2. To identify challenges and gaps in technology adoption and localized content development.
  3. To propose strategies for enhancing digital literacy through improved language technology integration.

Research Questions

  1. How has language technology influenced digital literacy in Hausa communities?
  2. What are the main challenges impeding effective technology adoption in these communities?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to improve digital literacy through language technology?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it highlights the transformative role of language technology in enhancing digital literacy among Hausa communities. By identifying key challenges and proposing targeted strategies, the research will inform policymakers, educators, and technology developers, ensuring that digital platforms are culturally relevant and accessible. Ultimately, this work supports socioeconomic empowerment and sustainable development in Northern Nigeria.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the examination of language technology’s impact on digital literacy in Hausa communities in Northern Nigeria. It does not extend to other regions or languages and focuses solely on digital interventions.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Language Technology: Tools and applications that facilitate language processing and communication.
  2. Digital Literacy: The ability to effectively use digital tools and understand digital content.
  3. Hausa Communities: Ethnic groups in Northern Nigeria primarily speaking the Hausa language.
